100 Days Til Summer

Only 100 Days Til Summer!

Let the countdown begin!  There’s only 100 days til summer officially starts, and we’re more than ready for everything that comes with our favorite season.  There’s nothing quite like summer in Chicago, when everyone emerges from their winter hideouts to crowd the beaches and Lakeshore Trail.  When the weather turns warm, the city becomes hub of music, art, and food as the streets transform into marketplaces.  And there’s no beating the views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline on sunny, blue-skied day.

In celebration of all the best parts of Chicago in summertime and in anticipation of some of our favorite annual events, here’s a list of just a few things we’re looking forward to in Summer 2017:

 Taste of Chicago

Chicago’s favorite festival of food is the largest in the world.  The Taste of Chicago offers samples of foods from all over the city, as well as live music and family-friendly entertainment.  Grant Park hosts this well-loved event, so you’ll have great views of the lakefront while you stuff your stomach.

Chicago Blues Festival

The largest music festival in the city is a celebration of blues like no other.  Three days, five stages, and half a million visitors make the Chicago Blues Festival a sight to see.  Admission is free.

Color in Motion 5k Run

Any chance to get messy for a good cause is a chance you don’t want to miss.  At the Color in Motion 5k, runners are covered in colored powder while raising money for charity.  Music and strategically placed mirrors for selfie-taking make this event fun for more than just athletes.

Though not the largest music festival in the city, Lollapalooza is one of the best recognized.  100,000 visitors attend the festival each of the three days of concerts.  Grant Park hosts once again, so music lovers enjoy great views along with great music.

Chicago Food Truck Fest

Chicagoans love their food trucks, which is why we have a whole festival dedicated to mobile eating.  The Chicago Food Truck Fest brings together the city’s best food trucks with live music and entertainment for a street dining experience like no other.  Admission is free, but vendors provide food at an additional cost.

Beach Season

Nothing says summer like the beach!  Chicago’s beaches open again at the end of May, and you can bet they’ll be packed.  If you’re tired of soaking up the sun and swimming in Lake Michigan, you can always try joining Chicago Sport and Social Club’s beach volleyball league.  Register alone and meet new people or start your own team with your friends.

Farmers Markets

Chicago’s Farmers Markets come out in full force every May.  Vendors sell fresh produce and specialty items at markets around the city.  Check the schedules posted online to find out when your nearest market is open.

Art Festivals

There are plenty of art and craft fairs that go on throughout Chicago during the summer months.  Art festivals are a great chance to support local artists, whether you’re just there to look or you purchase some artwork for yourself.  There are plenty of festivals to choose from, but if you’re looking to hit the highlights, Old Town Art Fair is one of Chicago’s favorite festivals and one of the best art fairs in the country.

 Navy Pier Fireworks

Every Wednesday and Saturday night Navy Pier’s fireworks display lights up the lake.  The shows can be watched from the dock, aboard one of the cruises on Lake Michigan, or from the shore.  Additional shows may be added to the schedule, so be sure to keep an eye on the calendar online.

And These Awesome T-Shirts

This winter may have been unseasonably warm, but summer is going to be hot, so get ready to bust out the short sleeves.  Can’t find any among all those sweaters you’ve been wearing for the past four months?  We’ve got you covered.  Head over to our store to pick up one of our t-shirts to wear on all your summertime adventures in the city.

At SummertimeCHI, summer in Chicago is more than a season.  We’re counting down the days left until ice cream and ale fests, long nights and sailboats on the lake.  Get ready Chicago–summer is coming!
