Hey Brown Girl: Fall Into Vintage

Presented by Aplomb and The 300 Group

Last weekend SummertimeCHI was front and center on the vintage scene and we do mean front and center!  STC’s very own Iva E. of Girl Goodies vended among several of Chicago’s leading vintage curators at the Hey Brown Girl: Fall Into Vintage event. The event was held in the Bronzeville neighborhood at Gallery Guichard.  Creator of the Aplomb brand and of this delightful event “Hey Brown Girl”, Chief Organizer, Michelle Merritt started with this vintage vision in 2014.  As a lover of all things vintage she set forth to personally select vintage curators based on their individual style and aesthetic.  Michelle is very serious about linking the entrepreneurial creativity and culture within others.  The tiniest vendor yet was 8 year old “Little Lady” of Pretty Little Things who hand crafted most of her girly accessories.

Hey Brown Girl featured several vendors including Michelle of Aplomb (her curated brand), Little Lady of Pretty Little Things, Tiara of Eighty4V, Brandi of 41SouthVintage, Brittani of Ready.Set.Vintage, Margarita of 8ty4 Vintage, Sekile of Polyester Soul, Ayesha of Shelly Jean’s Vintage, Bea of Beautyful Vintage, Lee of Handsome Features, Chris of Christopher’s Attic, Cici of Revntg, Demetrius of Savvy Settings, Honey of Creator, and myself, Iva of Girl Goodies.  Among the curators, both male and female vintage clothing and goods, housewares, and jewelry were sold.

The “Fly Girls” headed by Sydney Chatman performed a culturally explosive play that awed the crowd.  There were celebrity appearances by Special Ed and Dana Dane who eventually took over the mic at one point.  Not only was this a vintage night market (from 6 to 9 PM) but there was a vintage vinyl afterset (the partaayyyy).  We danced and listened to throwback jams presented by The 300 Group until our feet hurt, literally.  Actual vinyl was spun and we did our twirls too. Cocktails were easily accessible as DJ SP1 kicked the party off and DJ Jeff The Illest turned things up and took us into the night.  If you missed it, take a look at the gallery below and make sure you too are front and center at the next Hey Brown Girl event!
